Covid-19: 16 Almajiris test positive for coronavirus in Jigawa


Jigawa state government has announced that 16 out of 45 Almajiris returned from Kano state recently tested coronavirus positive.


In a live Facebook press conference hheld by the state commissioner of health, Dr Abba Zakari said 45 samples were returned out of which 16 were positive.


“On COVID-19, the state sent a total of 607 samples of the Kano returned almajiris, and only the 45 samples are ready on Thursday in which 16 were positive”, he explained.


Adding that “the 29 that returned negative would be re-united with their families soon. The Governor has ordered that each of them should be given a token of N10,000 and a peer of clothes”.

He also about 550 samples of the Kano returned almajiris are expected any moment from now. 


The sixteen tested positive would be transferred to the state’s isolation facility for further treatment.


He said Jigawa state have received 1,114 almajiris returned from Kano, Kaduna, Gombe and Nasarawa states.


Aaccording to official, the state is expecting another 99 repatriated Almajiries on Thursday from Plateau State who would also be quarantined for two weeks and their sample be taken.


Jigawa state, unlike the other states, is yet to commenced the repatriation of the non indigent almajiris back to their state of origin.


Instead, Jigawa state government identified them, restricted their movement and provided free meals pending the pandemic.


Badaru said “conveying them in large numbers violate the physical distancing rules meant to prevent the spread of the coronavirus”.
