The Council Chairman of Badagry West Local Council Development Area, Lagos state Mr Hontoyon Bamgbose, has condemned the frequent use of abbreviations by young students across the country, calling students to stop the habit as it would destroy their written and spoken English.
Bamgbose, made the call at a spelling bee competition organised by the council to help students spell words correctly.
According to him, the reading and spelling culture in public schools have become dead as most students do not take interest in reading anymore.
He said, “students also misspell simple words that everyone should know; it has started becoming very embarrassing. Due to frequent abbreviation of words, students
tend to forget how to spell correctly, and this affects their performances.
“Students must learn to use full words and shun abbreviation. This competition will revive reading and spelling culture among students,’’ he added.
The chairman also appealed to parents to encourage their children to improve in their education.
It is worthy to note that six students emerged winners at the competition.
