Corrupt powerful bankers caused my exit – Sanusi

The embattled suspended Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mallam Lamido Sanusi, said powerful corrupt individuals in the banking sector where responsible for his downfall.
He said they did this because they were benefiting from the looting going on in the nation’s petroleum industry.

He said: “I was privileged to know that when I was writing my letter to the president to alert him that billions of oil money was not remitted to the federation account by the NNPC, some powerful individuals got wind of it and vowed to ensure that I did not get away with it, because they were immensely befitting from the fraud.

“In the last 19 months, for example, some powerful individuals from NNPC diverted the sum of $3.5 billion dollars, as what they looted from kerosene subsidy.
“What they normally do is double whatever they pay for a letter of kerosene and they do this mostly through the banks, and some of those powerful bankers are closed to those I dealt with.

“The issue is this, I m the CBN Governor, I came from a respected royal family and I specialise in risk management, therefore why should I allow some few individuals to continue looting in NNPC when the economy of the country is giving us sleepless night?
“I wrote the president, I exposed them, and I was suspended, which I m challenging in court, even though I will be the last person to go back to my office again even if I win in court.”
