The National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) has urged the Edo state government and security agencies to strengthen efforts in safeguarding lives and properties following the murder of its South-south coordinator, Comr. Umoru Segiru, popularly known as Hybrid.
Segiru was killed on November 8, 2024, in an attack that underscored the rising insecurity in the state.
In a statement signed by the association’s vice-president for national affairs, Comr. Oghayan Eshiofune Paul, NAPS commended the Edo state governor for lifting the ban on the Edo State Security Network (ESSN), emphasising that the move was critical in tackling insecurity.
“The gruesome murder of Comr. Segiru is a painful reminder of the threats facing our communities. We call on the state government and security operatives to work closely to ensure such incidents are prevented in the future. Justice must be served,” the statement read.
NAPS also acknowledged the restraint shown by students, who chose peace over protests following the incident.
The association reiterated its commitment to fostering collaboration with the government while urging for greater accountability from security agencies.
The group expressed confidence in the governor’s leadership and called for the reinforcement of the ESSN to restore public confidence and ensure the safety of all residents.
