A group under the aegis of Speakers’ Corner Trust Nigeria (SCTN) has said that social media could forced government to take actions that would drive a change and also make it accountable to the people that voted them into power.

The group also disclosed that #BringBackOurGirls# hash tag has generated 2 million signatures, which it said was the most retweeted hash tag in the world.
The group said this at the weekend in Abuja during its monthly debate titled, “In the Quest of  Justice and Social Equality, is Social Media the Best Catalyst for Attaining Change?”

Fielding questions from newsmen shortly after the event, the group chairman board of directors, Dr. Timiebi Koripemo-Agary said Boko Haram sect were fighting the wrong people by kidnapping the Chibok girls as their parents are not in government.
Supporting social media at the event, Ms. Viola Okolie said it gives the people the opportunity to air their views on government policies that didn’t go down well with them.

She said: “Social media create online political activism, the future belongs to us, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) have taken us to the cleaners.”
In his view, Mr. Stanley Bentu said the lack of control and regulation of social media made it more dangerous, adding that variety of information could be given out without teaching the audience how to process it, thus leading to violent protest.
