Centre destroys 3000 rifles, declares war against illegal security outfits

The National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW) has destroyed 3000 illegally acquired rifles recovered from criminals and individuals while declaring war against unauthorised security outfits contributing to the proliferation of weapons in the country.

The North Central Zonal Coordinator of NCCSALW, Major General Hamza Bature (rtd) stated this in a press briefing in Minna.

He explained that the destroyed weapons also included those seized by the military in operations against criminal elements in parts of the country.

Major General Bature listed the outlawed security outfits to include the National Taskforce also known as NATFORCE and one Civilian JTF which originated in Abuja recently.

He explained that the activities of NATFORCE have been proscribed under the Executive Order of former President Muhammadu Buhari, noting that the activities of the unauthorised outfits are however exacerbating the country’s security challenges.

He said, “Regrettably, it has been observed that these unauthorised outfits have sprung up deceitfully presenting themselves as the focal organisations for the control of illicit small arms and light weapons, creating false impression of legitimacy and authority.”

While assuring Nigerians that the NCCSALW will continue to work diligently with all arms-bearing security agencies and other stakeholders to stem the tide of illegal arms proliferation, the Zonal Coordinator said investigation into the activities of the unauthorised organisations has commenced.

“We have monitored and observed the activities of NATFORCE particularly in Kogi state and other parts of Nigeria. We have interviewed over 50 people who this particular organisation has given letter of employment after collecting money from the individuals without offices.

“I don’t know the task they are on to or who gave them the authority to do what they are doing. These are mere criminals coming out to organise themselves as a regular body to perform illegitimate task”, he said.

He expressed concerns over the conduct of training for many innocent people in Abuja by the Civilian JTF outfit and issuance of black caps, T-shirts and black trousers, asking: “What is their mandate, under which security agency or ministry are they operating?”
