The federal and state governments have been urged to “take immediate measures to address the problems of livestock sub-sector of the economy or resort to importing animals for the nutritional needs and religious sacrifices in years to come.
National President of the Kulen Allah Cattle Rearers Association of Nigeria (KACRAN), Hon. Khalil Muhammad Bello, made the call in a press statement issued yesterday in Damaturu, Yobe state.
Bello noted that the administration of President Muhammad Buhari had done well in the agriculture sector, but regretted the neglect of the livestock sub-sector.
“We are highly troubled by the continual neglect of the livestock sub-sector of the economy. We compassionately alert governments about the prevailing unfavourable condition of cattle rearers in the country.
The federal and state governments should make enough budgetary allocations for livestock production just as it is being done in other sectors,” he said.
He called for improved vaccines, tools and re-establishment and to guard the already marked out and gazetted cattle routes and grazing reserves which had been blocked or totally destroyed by farmers.
Kulen acknowledged the efforts of Governor Ibrahim Gaidam of Yobe state for releasing the sum of N184 million worth of animal feeds and distribution of same free-of-charge to cattle rearers.
They solicited with the federal and state governments to follow the same suite by meeting needs of the pastoralists.
