Cardiologist cautions against excessive intake of alcohol, salt

A Consultant Cardiologist, Dr Olushola Osho, recently said unhealthy lifestyle such as intake of excessive salt, alcohol and processed food could cause hypertension, even at early age.
Osho, who is the Chief Consultant Cardiologist at the Gold Cross Hospital, Ikoyi, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
He said that hypertension, commonly referred to as high blood pressure, often showed no signs or symptoms, but could cause damage to the heart, blood vessels, and kidneys.
“There is no age limit, we see children having high blood pressure. We also see people who are 90 years with high blood pressure.
“So, there is no limit and there’s no question of whether you are a sinner or you are a saint or you are a pastor or you are a doctor, nobody is exempt.
“People should learn to live an active life and an active life does not mean using N10 million to register in a gym, which you will not go to.
“Merely walking from your house for about 20 minutes to 30 minutes and returning to your house every day is enough.
“If you are not able to do it every day at your own leisure, not necessarily at Olympic speed; it’s more than enough.
“That takes a lot of burden off your system and makes you a healthier person,” Osho said.
The cardiologist urged Nigerians to check their blood pressure regularly and adopt a healthy lifestyle.
He said that was the only way to prevent or delay its effects on the body. (NAN)
