Businessman in court for drug trafficking

A 39-year-old businessman, Ernest Ohagwu, has been brought before Federal High Court, Lagos, on allegation of trafficking 735 grammes of heroine.
The prosecutor, Mr. Ichakpa Oigoga, told the court that Ohagwu, who resides in Onitsha, Anambra, attempted to export the drug to China.
Oigoga alleged that the accused committed the offence on December 10, 2013, during the boarding of Qatar Airways to China at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.

He said that the offence contravened the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Laws of the Federation 2004.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.
His Counsel, Mr. Sunday Okwor, urged the court to grant bail to the accused, adding that the bail application was supported with a nine-paragraph affidavit sworn to by a brother to the accused that he would not jump bail.

The prosecutor, however, opposed the bail application, adding that he filed a 10-paragraph counter-affidavit opposing the bail application and attached to it was a confessional statement made by the accused when he was arrested.
Justice Mohammed Yunusa, deferred the ruling on the bail application to the adjourned date of February 25, 2014.
