A former Chief of Army Staff and Nigerian Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd) has urged leaders in different strata of the Nigerian society to promote unity in diversity for a cohesive nation.
Buratai said the contemporary society required quality leaders who are equipped with knowledge and competencies to navigate complex challenges, bridge divides and inspire collective action.
The former Army Chief stated this at the graduation ceremony of Leadership and National Cohesion Course 2 of 2024 organised by the Martin Luther Agwai International Peace Keeping Center (MLAILPKC) in collaboration with Japanese Government and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) at the Army Resource Centre in Abuja.
He urged them to reject hate speeches and embrace the values of leadership, integrity and service to the nation.
“Note that your role as leaders is crucial in upholding the principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality and dignity, even in the face of adversity. As leaders, you must foster a culture of tolerance, empathy and understanding, where every individual feel valued, respected and included,” he said.
Buratai said leadership and national cohesion were more relevant today than ever due to the fact that the world was increasingly becoming more complex and the challenges being faced require collective action, collaboration and a deep sense of shared purpose.
“As leaders, you have critical roles to play in promoting national cohesion and building a more united, stable and prosperous society
“You are ambassadors of hope, beacons of positive change and champions of national cohesion,” he added.
He charged them to promote education, community engagements and economic opportunities.
“You must reject hate speech and celebrate diversity, recognizing that unique backgrounds, cultures, and perspective are the very fabrics that strengthens a society,” he said.
Earlier in his remarks,The commandant, MLAILPKC, Maj.-Gen. Ademola Adedoja, said any nation without leadership and national coercion will ultimately be vulnerable to disintegration, instability and stagnation, hence, the need to develop a new generation of visionary leaders who can inspire and unite the people towards a common goal .
