United Kingdom (UK) government has commended Governor Rabi’u Kwankwaso of Kano state for his administration’s giant strides in the education sector.
The commendation was contained in a goodwill message delivered by the Country Director of the Department for International Development (DfID) in Nigeria, who was represented by its coordinator in Kano and Katsina states, Dr. Siaka Ahassan.
He said: “We commend the big stride the Kano state government is making in education. We are very proud of this and achievements in other sectors.”
The UK’s DfID made the observation during a three-day retreat for political office holders and other key government functionaries in Kano state, held in Kaduna state.
Also, Governor Muktar Yero of Kaduna state, who was a guest at the event, praised his counterpart in Kano for ‘an excellent performance” in governance, particularly in the education sector.
Yero, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Yahaya Aminu, said: “Even though you don’t score yourself high, the people of Kano who are enjoying the dividends of democracy will score excellently.
“If you see a government that is performing, as we see in Kano, it shows the civil servants are working.”
The Head of Service in the state, Dr Umar Shehu Minjibir, the organiser of the event, listed some of the welfare packages for workers to include payment of salaries on or before 25th of every month; review in pension earning from the hitherto paltry N135 only to an astronomical increase leading to N5,000 as minimum; house ownership packages, including sale of GPs to civil servants and allocation of 500 units from three new cities of Kwankwasiyya, Amana and Bandirawo.
