Breaking: Taraba gov signs 2020 budget into law

The Taraba state governor, Arch. Darius Dickson Ishaku, has signed into law the 2020 appropriation bill of two hundred and fifteen billion, eight hundred and twenty-three million, five hundred and seventy-six thousand and eight hundred and ten naira (N215,823,576,810:00) christened: “budget of accelerated growth and development”.

The figure represents an increase of two billion, one hundred and ninety-one million, five hundred thousand naira (N2,191,500,000:00) from the initial sum of two hundred and thirteen billion, six hundred and thirty-two million, seventy-six thousand, eight hundred and ten naira (N213,632,076,810:00) presented to the Taraba state House of Assembly on December 19, 2019.

Signing the budget into law Friday, Ishaku expressed gratitude to the state house of assembly members for the accelerated hearing giving to the budget, which he said led to its timely passage into law and assured the lawmakers of the cooperation of the state executive in moving the state forward.

He said: “Since the 19th of December, 2019, when I presented the budget to the state assembly, I know the pressure the Speaker put on the members for an accelerated hearing, which led to the budget being signed into law today, January 24, 2020. Therefore, I want to express my gratitude to the state assembly for their cooperation in moving the state forward. I want to assure them that the executive is 100 per cent committed to working with the lawmakers for a better Taraba state.

“Leadership is measured by the strides made on behalf of the people, so I appeal for us to do more than we have been doing for our people. There are many things I packaged into the budget, especially contracts, so that we can continue to have funds to develop the state to an enviable height. In the past, many people criticised me for some projects I initiated, but I thank God that today they are becoming superfluous with gratitude. Together, we will continue working for a better Taraba.”

Speaking earlier, while presenting the budget to the governor, Speaker of the Taraba state house of assembly, Rt. Hon. Joseph Albasu Kunini (PhD), said that the Christmas and New Year celebrations did not deter the lawmakers from carrying out their responsibilities as they painstakingly scrutinised the proposed budget and approved same for the governor to kick start the accelerated development of the state.

“The unprecedented support and cooperation received from the governor and others is largely responsible for the timely legislative action on the Bill. The support of the governor is a clear manifestation of the cordial and harmonious relationship between all the arms of government in the state. I appreciate and commend my colleagues for assiduously carrying out their constitutional responsibilities in the overall interest of Taraba state,” he said.
