Breaking: Court sentences 14 people to 2 months jail for violating lockdown order in Osun


An Osun State Magistrate Court sitting in Osogbo, Wednesday, sentenced 14 people to two months imprisonment for violating stay-at-home order of the state government. 


The convicts are: Adeoye Johnson, Ibrahim Babatunde, Akinloye Lukman, Owolabi Azeez, Hammed Basharu, Akinwande Saheed and Seun Agboola. 


Others are: Aribidesi Muideen, Sulaimon Ismail, Olaleye Moses, Alade Mayowa, Muniru Bashiru, Omodele Titilayo and Sulaiman Basharu. 


The prosecutor, Mr Kayode Adeoye, told the court that the convicts committed the offence on April 8, 2020 at 11.30am. 


He said the convicts did “disobey the state government lockdown/stay at home order and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 203 of the Criminal Code CAP 34 Vol. II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2002.


He further alleged that the convicts did conduct themselves in a manner likely to cause breach of peace by deliberately failed to comply with the state government lockdown/stay at home order and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 249(D) of the Criminal Code CAR 34 Vol II, Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002. 

Meanwhile, the convicts admitted guilty of the two count charges of disobedience and conduct likely to cause breach of peace. 


Their Counsel, Mr. Okobie Najite, urged the court to be lenient in sentencing them. 


Magistrate Olusegun Ayilara thereby sentenced them to two months imprisonment with an option of N5,000 fine and one day community service in the court premises.
