Boko Haram: Red Cross re-unites mother, daughter after 4 years

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said yesterday that it had reunited a mother, Aishatu Shehu, with her seven-year-old daughter, Amina, after they were separated for four years as a result of the Boko Haram insurgency.

An official of ICRC in Adamawa state, Pamela Ongoma, disclosed this while speaking with reporters in Yola yesterday. Ms Ongoma said that the duo was reunited following several contacts through phone calls, photograph exchange and other means. She said Amina was separated from her mother in 2014 when she was threeyears-old after an attack on their village in Askira Uba local government area of Borno state.

Ms Ongoma said Aishatu was located in Maiha local government area of Adamawa state while her daughter was traced to an adopted mother in Dusulu village of Damboa local government area of Borno state in 2017.

“The ICRC in collaboration with the Nigeria Red Cross Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has ordered security agencies to beef up security in Mubi, Adamawa state, and environs, especially markets and places of worship, following the bomb attack in the state on Tuesday.

The directive was contained in a release issued yesterday by the Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande.

The release stated that the federal government was shocked and outraged by the suicide bomb attacks on a Mosque and a market in Mubi, Adamawa, describing the incident as “tragic.”

“This desecration of a place of worship by criminals is tragic and condemnable,” he said. He said the vice-president condoled with the victims and their families, the government and people of Adamawa state. The release added that Osinbajo expressed the gratitude of the federal government to the rescue workers and medical personnel, who attended to the victims.

He also gave the assurance that security agencies were also working to apprehend the criminals behind the dastardly act and bring them to justice. According to the release, the vice-president has been in touch with Governor Bindow Jibrilla of Adamawa state for on the spot assessment of the incident. Osinbanjo directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to ensure speedy and adequate provision of medical supplies and relief materials to the victims.
