Boko Haram kills more in 2017 –Amnesty

Amnesty International said yesterday that Boko Haram terrorists killed more people in the North-east in this year as against 2016, despite military interventions.

The recent reports by the international body, said 223 people had died due to terrorists attacks in the North-east since April 2017 to date, showing a sharp rise in Boko Haram attack when compare to the corresponding period in 2016.

According to the reports, most of the attacks occurred in Borno with many of them being suicide attacks carried out by women and girls forced into the act.

It also said that at least 158 people were also killed by the terror group in Cameroon within the same period.

“Boko Haram is once again committing war crimes on a huge scale, exemplified by the depravity of forcing young girls to carry explosives with the sole intention of killing as many people as they possibly can,” said Alioune Tine, Amnesty International’s Director for West and Central Africa.

“This wave of shocking Boko Haram violence, propelled by a sharp rise in suicide bombings, highlights the urgent need for protection and assistance for millions of civilians in the Lake Chad region.”

He urged governments of Nigeria, Cameroon and other affected countries to take “swift action” to protect civilians from “this campaign of terror, which it said had led to dead of about 100,000 people since 2009.
