Anambra state council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Friday, elected new officers to pilot their affairs for the next three years with Blueprint reporter and a member of Correspondent Chapel, Dr Okechukwu Onuegbu, emerging as Secretary.
Also, Dr Odogwu Emeka Odogwu of Authority newspaper was reelected as Chairman, while Comrade Beatrice Onuchukwu of the Pointer newspaper became Vice Chairman.
Others were Comrade Chinyere Ogbuagu of State Information Chapel – Assistant Secretary; Comrade Chibuzo Obidike of Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS) – Treasurer; and Comrade Ogochukwu Onwukwe of State Information – Financial Secretary.
However, while others were unopposed, office of the Chairman was contested between Comrade Odogwu and Comrade Ngozi Obileri of Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS) with Odogwu pooling 173 votes against Obileri’s 40 votes.
Office of the Treasurer which was also contested between Obidike and Ogemdi Ozoemenam of Odenigbo FM (Living Christ Chapel) had Obidike polling 168 votes against 45 garnered by Ozoemenam. Office of the Internal Auditor was vacant.
Speaking at the occasion, the National President of NUJ, Comrade Alhassan Yahya, represented by the Secretary, South East C, Comrade Eze Adiukwu, commended the contestants and voters for outcome of the poll and charged them to show solidarity to the winners so as to move the union forward.
In acceptance speech, the reelected state chairman, Odogwu commended Anambra state government for refusing to intervene in the process, while promising to reach out to his opponent as well as run an open door policy althrough.
The state chairman of NLC, Comrade Humphrey Emeka Nwafor, noted that labour valued contribution of journalists and media generally in a democratic system and urged them to uphold the ethical codes with a view to build a better society.
