Benue: Suspected herdsmen k!ll 3 security operatives, protest erupts, curfew imposed in Naka

Youths in Gwer West Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue state Tuesday took to the streets in protest, burning down the council secretariat and the Ter Tyoshin Palace.

This violent outburst was sparked by the killing of three Civil Protection Guards by armed herdsmen militia in On-Mba-Aondo village on Monday night.

According to Hon. Victor Torsar Ormin, Chairman of LGA, the attack has left many other people dead and several others injured.

The chairman condemned the senseless killings and assured the community that the government is working tirelessly to find a durable solution to the crisis.

In an effort to prevent further breakdown of law and order, Ormin has declared a 24-hour curfew in Naka town, effective immediately.

He urged citizens to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as they work to restore peace and order to the community.

The chairman also offered his condolences to those who have lost loved ones, emphasising that the community shares their pain and grief.

He warned that further violence and lawlessness will not be tolerated and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Spokesperson, Benue State Police Command, CSP Catherine Sewuese Anene, confirmed the incident and said, “Information has been received about an ongoing protest in Naka and the Commissioner of Police moved this morning to the area with other tactical teams.

“Further development will be communicated to you please.”

Meanwhile Benue state governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has strongly condemned the brutal attack and murder incident.

The governor described the act as “vicious and ferocious” and a “flagrant affront to the peace and security of our communities.”

He acknowledged the anger and frustration of the people, but appealed for restraint and calm, emphasising that destruction of property only hinders the government’s efforts to build peace and security.

Governor Alia also called on security agencies to intensify their efforts in detecting and capturing the perpetrators, ensuring they face the full wrath of the law.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment to enhancing security efforts and protecting communities from further attacks.

The governor urged citizens to remain vigilant and collaborate with security agencies in reporting unusual activities.

He emphasised the importance of standing together against violence and striving for peace and justice in Benue State.

This incident is the latest in a series of deadly attacks by herdsmen militia in Benue state, leaving many to question the government’s ability to protect its citizens.
