Benue flooding: Tor Tiv warns against relief materials diversion

Tiv Paramount Ruler, Tor Tiv V, Professor James Ayatse, has warned that anyone who diverted the relief materials meant for the flood victims will face the anger of the gods.

Ayatse , who is also chairman of the Benue council of chiefs, who led traditional rulers in the state to pay a visit to the  flood victims at Makurdi Ultra Modern Market camp and the federal government Internal Displaced Persons camp at North Bank, Makurdi, charged the Benue state Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to ensure that the materials got only to the real flood victims.

“I want to say that what is important to the agency handling the relief materials is to ensure that what is coming as relief materials should be targeted on real people that are affected by the flood.

“This is because there are people, when something like this happen, they take advantage, and the real people affected do not get to benefit. I want to counsel and charge that whatever comes in should be distributed under God’s fear so that those affected receive whatever is for them.

“It should not disappear into people’s home or find its way into the market place, but it should only be given to those affected.

“As traditional rulers, we also represent our ancestors, and we also talk to the Almighty God, so any deliberate violation of this injunction, the gods will be angry”, he added.

Earlier, Executive Secretary of Benue SEMA Boniface Ortese commended the Benue Council of Chiefs for providing succour to the flood victims saying the 120 bags of rice donated will go a long way to address the immediate needs of the victims.
