Benin disco plans 300mw embedded power


The management of BEDC Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC)  Tuesday disclosed that it would actualize its proposal for an embedded power of about 300 megawatts to boost power supply and meet customers need in its franchise States.

 According to the company, the embedded power service would be anchored under “the willing buyer, willing seller arrangement with independent power generators”.

Spokesman of BEDC, Mr. Adekunle Tayo in a statement  issued in Benin City said the arrangement is outside the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) national grid.

Tayo quoted BEDC management as disclosing this to its  customers across the franchise states of Edo, Delta, Ondo/Ekiti during a Public Consultation Forum organized ahead of the tariff review.

He also said: “with a reviewed tariff, it will revolutionize electricity distribution and provision of top services to customers by embarking on network re-alignment, and provide new distribution transformers.

The spokesman assured customers that it would improve supply to commercial entities across its coverage states due to the need to enable the companies ensure job creation and balance social lives, by adding new injection substations and 500 number distribution substations.

He further quoted the Deputy General Manager, Consumer Affair, Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Mr. Shittu Shuaibu as saying “from Tuesday, NERC had brought out an order restricting the distribution companies from billing customers arbitrarily.”

The statement adds that  the public forum was initiated by NERC to ensure that  customers who were most critical part of the electricity sector value chain was given a voice  to air their views on the tariff review
