Bears return as equity market sheds N202bn

The local equity market on Friday closed the week in a bearish run, depreciating by N202 billion as losses recorded in the shares of some capitalised companies impacted negatively on the trading activities.

The market capitalisation of listed equities declined by 0.30 per cent to N66.465 trillion from N66.667 trillion recorded the previous day.

The NGX All Share Index also depreciated by 321.65 basis points to 105753.61 points from 106074.26 points reported on Thursday.

Although the market breadth was positive during the day, the losses recorded in the shares of Dangote Cement and others wiped out the gains in the stocks of Vitafoam Nigeria Plc, Eterna Plc, Ikeja Hotel, international Breweries among others.

As a result, the year-to-date return declined to 2.75 per cent as 41 companies closed in green against 14 firms that closed in red.

An analysis of the investment showed that the trading for the day showed that three companies closed the day with 10 per cent. International Breweries, Legend International, Ikeja Hotel led gainers table with 10 per cent each, to close at N7.70, N6.82 and N12.10 respectively. Vitafoam Nigeria Plc followed with a gain of 9.93 per cent to close at N44.85 per unit Eterna Plc added 9.92 per cent to close at N39.90 per share.

On the contrary, Dangote Cement topped losers chart for the day, declining by 10 per cent to N432.00 Regal Insurance trailed with a loss of 8.06 per cent to close at N0.57 per unit, VFD group fell by 7.57 per cent to close at N17.10 per unit Chams sheds 7.27 per cent to close at N2.04 per share Sovereign Trust Insurance declined 6.12 per cent to close at N0.92 per unit.

The volume of trades increased by 99.825 million, representing30.41 per cent as investors traded 428.082 million shares valued at N20.174 billion in 14284 deals against 328.257 million shares cost N10.370 billion exchanged hands the previous day in 12142 deals.

Transactions in the shares of GTCO Plc led market activities with 60.735 million shares valued at N3.807 billion, Fidelity Bank followed with 41.407 million shares cost N829.294 million, AccessCorp traded 40.556 million shares valued at N968.261 million, MTN exchanged 32.969 million shares cost N8.240 per share, Zenith Bank traded 22.935 million shares valued at N1.054 billion.
