Be steadfast in your educational pursuit, Rotary president counsels students

The Connect President Rotary Club of Abuja Maitama Rotn. Eucharia Ekweozoh has said education remains the key to a successful life.

Ekweozoh also said the present generation of students should aspire to be professionals in various fields.

She spoke at a career counselling session and dental hygiene advocacy by the club at the Junior Secondary School Dutsen Alhaji in Bwari Area Council of Abuja.

“The only key to a successful life is education because it is the pivot of development in any society. With educated citizenry, a nation will have peace, experience growth and development and its social ills will be limited.

“I want to appeal to all of you to see this junior secondary school level as the beginning of your education. You must aspire to greater heights. This nation needs your service, you must put in your best.

“We have brought a career session to you in order to guide your choices as you move to senior secondary school. Try to be determined and focused. We are passing the buck to parents by appealing to them to continue to invest in the education of their children. The alternative is to have a society where ignorance thrives,” Ekweozoh said.

Counselling on health, the Rotarian said: “Like in other climes, I will appeal to Nigerians to pay attention to their health, especially dental care which we have neglected.”

In her remarks, an educationist, Rotn. Uche Amako told the gathering that the  choice of subjects would  determine the careers of the students.

“You have to be careful in choosing your subject combination to achieve your dreams. You must seek guidance and counselling on subjects to be able to become professionals in different fields.

“I also need to emphasize that you must work hard in order to lag behind your classmates. If you are serious minded, the sky is your limit,” she said.

Also speaking at the occasion,  a dentist, Dr. Zara Natalie Dilli said: “Most diseases are contacted through oral process but we do not know.

“You must pay attention to oral hygiene in order to avoid  bacteria infection and oral diseases like periodontal (gum) diseases, dental caries (tooth decay), oral cancers, cleft lip and palate and noma. You must always brush your teeth at least twice a day to avoid infections.”

Expressing her gratitude for the enlightenment programme, the school’s  principal, Hajiya Silifat Ahmed Abdulrazaq lauded the club for “adopting and assisting the school.

“Your career guidance session is timely because some of these students are transiting to senior secondary school level. We will make use of your advice.”
