The Bauchi state Environmental Protection Agency (BASEPA) has disclosed that there were 84 recognised refuse dump sites in the state capital where wastes were being evacuated periodically by the agency.
Permanent Secretary of the agency, Ahmed Shehu Lame, who made this disclosure yesterday when he received a coalition of youth activists in the state, under the aegis of ‘Activista Bauchi’ who paid him an advocacy visit.
Lame urged residents to dispose refuse only at the places recognised by BASEPA to facilitate effective evacuation.
The permanent secretary, who re-iterated the commitment of the agency to keeping the state clean and hygienic, warned that any one found dumping refuse indiscriminately in the metropolis would be dealt with, noting that such habit could pose threats, including epidemic and other dangers.
He said the agency would not only evacuate wastes but also deploy sanitary inspectors to go round the town in search of environmental offenders who would arraign any offender and try them in a mobile court in order to deterring others.
Earlier, the state Coordinator of Activista Bauchi, Mr Tosin Suberu, represented by Yakubu Ali, explained that the visit was to solicit the collaboration of the agency with the stakeholders in the areas of hygiene and sanitation.
He expressed the group’s intention to liaise with the agency to evacuate the heaps of refuse dumped at the Bauchi old graveyard and Gwallameji village, posed nuisance to the students of the Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi who reside in the area.
He, therefore, appealed to BASEPA to provide trucks, shovels, spades, rakes and other tools to enable them clear the wastes disposed at the two places.
