Banker, eight others killed in renewed Edo cult war

Tension is mounting in Edo state following a renewed cult clash between members of Eiye and Bukarneer confraternity over the weekend.
At last count yesterday, no fewer than nine persons, including a staff member of a new generation bank, have been reportedly feared dead.
Others included a final year student of the state-owned Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma, identified as Osaji Osamudiamen and a female graduating student in the institution.
While the banker was felled at Upper Mission road of the Benin Metropolis on Saturday night, Osamudiamen was shot dead a day before.

A source who craved for anonymity told Blueprint that the banker was killed due to his alleged financial backing of a rival group.
An eyewitness said Osamudiamen, a 500-level Commuter Science student, was shot on the head at close range while clubbing at a popular hotel in Ekpoma.
According to the witness, the student was until his death, the head of Bukarneer in Ekpoma; during which he had disagreement with a rival cult group.

“Although the issue was said to have been resolved, but I cannot really tell why they still killed him,” the source added.
In Benin City, one Jonathan was reported killed at a brothel near Ekiosa market. It was however gathered that his death sparked off a reprisal attack from opposing group.

Consequently, no fewer than five persons were allegedly killed at different locations in around Upper Sakponba area in Benin City.
When contacted, the state police commissioner, Mr. Folosho Adebanjo, referred our correspondent to the state image maker.
Attempt to obtain comment from the police spokesman, DSP Moses Eguavoen, was not successful, as calls put across to his phone went unanswered.
