The Birnin Gwari Emirate in Kaduna state yesterday said 215 people were killed in one year by armed bandits in the area.
It also said cattle rustlers operating in the area within the same period rustled 14, 763 cows and economic activities finally collapsed due to insecurity.
A former Managing Director of Kaduna state Media Corporation, Zubair Abdurauf Idris, who spoke on behalf of the Emirate disclosed this to newsmen in Kaduna.
He said: “I was mandated by Birnin-Gwari Emirate to speak on the incessant attacks, killings and cattle rustlings that have become the order of the day in our area. From January 2013 to February 2014, a total of 14,763 cows were stolen and 215 people were killed during the period. These statistics are actual information gathered by district heads. The figures can be more. Everyday Birnin-Gwari -Kaduna road and Birnin-Gwari-Funtua road become an armed robbery centre. Even on Saturday two people were killed on the Birnin Gwari-Kaduna road.”
Similarly, cattle rustlers were on Saturday night in Southern Kaduna repelled by vigilantes after they had stolen about 200 cows from about three farms.
The incident, according to a source, occurred in Ungwan Rana District in Jaba local government area.
The source, Ibrahim Jibrin, said: “They came around midnight. After they had stolen the cattle, they started moving to road that would connect them with Kafanchan. The vigilantes in the villages were alerted and they engaged them in a battle, and they escaped leaving behind the cattle.”
