Bandits kidnap 3 councillors in Zamfara, demand N40m

The Zamfara state police command has confirmed the kidnapping of three councillors of Gummi local government council of the group state.

The Command’s public relations officer, SP Muhammad Shehu, disclosed this in an interview with Blueprint on Friday, saying one of the victims escaped from the captivity of the bandits.

According to the police image maker, the Command had swung into action to rescue the remaining two local government lawmakers.

“The Command had already deployed tactical team in collaboration with the army to rescue the remaining two local government councillors from the captivity of the bandits and arrested the culprits for prosecution,” he said.

Shehu urged Zamfara communities to remain law-abiding citizens and to always provide information to the police about any strange movement by any person or group of people or criminals hide-outs within their respective domains for prompt action.

Blueprint gathered that the kidnapped councillors were Hon. Sahabi Abubakar of Birnin Tudu Ward, Hon. Lawal Gummi of Ubandawaki Ward and Hon. Murtala Arzika of Gayari Ward.

It was further gathered that the three councillors were intercepted on Gummi to Gusau road at around 6:30 pm on Thursday by the bandits on their way to Gusau to attend an important meeting.

The source further revealed that the bandits had so far demanded N40 million as random before they could release their captives.

The chairman of Gummi local government area, Alhaji Kabiru Aski, in a telephone interview with journalists, confirmed the incident, stressing that his local government “is making all it could in collaboration with the security operatives to rescue the remaining two local government councillors from the bandits captivity.”
