The people were displaced from their villages following the invasion of 18 villages in Birnin Yero area of Kaduna state by armed bandits and subsequent dislodgement of about 2,000 locals a few weeks ago.

The lawmaker said his visit to the locals who are currently camping at LEA Primary School, Birnin Yero, was to guide against possible humanitarian crisis that could arise as a result of lack of food.

The items distributed, according to the needs of the displaced persons, included cash, rice, spaghetti, sugar, rice, oil, sachet water, bread and milk worth N2 million. Financial support was also extended to members of the civilian Joint Task Force that assists the security agencies in curbing the activities of bandits in Kaduna state.

The displaced communities included Dalhatu, Digani, Ungwan Audu, Bakin Kasuwa, Jura, Ungwan Tofa, Sauran Giwa, Kosau, Kajinjiri and Gidan Makeri.

Assessing the condition of the camp during the visit, Senator Sani, observed that in addition to the previous aid, the displaced persons may need health and medical assistance, especially the most vulnerable groups of children, women and the elderly, as well as awareness on disease and epidemic prevention.

He noted the need for civil society and professional bodies to assist in providing numerous services, social activities and protection services to all IDPs across the country in partnership with other international organizations and the authorities in the communities where IDPs are located.

He urged the authorities and the public to contribute to support stability of families affected by security incidents by supporting life saving of the affected communities and the stability of affected families.

“Such services should include vocational and professional training service aimed to build the capacity of displaced family members and the host community and to empower them vocationally and professionally to help them secure income for their families,” Uba Sani said.
