Australian batsman Hughes fighting for his life after being hit by a bouncer

Australian batsman Phil Hughes is fighting for his life in a Sydney hospital after being knocked unconscious by a bouncer that struck him on the head during a Sheffield Shield match on Tuesday.
The left-hander, who has played 26 Tests for Australia and been involved in three Ashes series, has had surgery and is in an induced coma in intensive care.
The 25-year-old, playing for South Australia against New South Wales at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), was struck on the side of his helmet by a Sean Abbott delivery and collapsed face-first to the ground shortly afterwards.
It is now a tense wait for the loved ones and cricketing colleagues who rushed to his bedside – including Australia captain Michael Clarke – to hear if Hughes’ surgery was successful. His family has released a statement which said ‘the outcome of that surgery is unlikely to be known for the next 24 to 48 hours.’
Horrified spectators watched as paramedics performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on the batsman and treated him on the boundary for around 40 minutes. He was then taken from the field on a medicab and flown to St Vincent’s Hospital by helicopter.
Hughes arrived at the hospital on life support, St Vincent’s spokesman David Faktor said. He underwent scans as soon as he arrived and was then taken in for surgery.
‘He’s in the best of hands, he has loved ones here,’ Mr Faktor said.
