The atmosphere was electric at the Minna Military Cantonment as the Training and Doctrine Command Nigerian Army (TRADOC NA) and 31 Artillery Brigade co-hosted the Joint West African Social Activities (WASA) 2024 on Saturday, 7 December 2024.
A statement by Acting Deputy Director Army Public Relations TRADOC Lt.-Col. Sani Uba disclosed that disclosed that the all important event brought together military personnel, their families, other security agencies in Niger state and other guests in a vibrant celebration of culture and camaraderie.
The event held at the Cantonment Parade Ground, marked a significant occasion for the Nigerian Army, offering a unique platform to end the activities of the year 2024 on high note.
In his remarks, the Special Guest of Honour and Commander TRADOC, Major General Kevin Aligbe, expressed his delight with the social event which culminated the year’s activities.
Aligbe stated that the event was significant for the Nigerian Army as it provides an opportunity for social activities where officers and men to wine and dine with their families and friends, while promoting the value of unity and togetherness.
Reflecting on the achievements of the year 2024, Maj.-Gen. Aligbe praised the successful execution of training activities by TRADOC NA and 31 Artillery Brigade, despite the challenging nature of the security environment in Niger state.
“I have no doubt that the Brigade and units are set to consolidate the operational gains made so far, and our commitment to maintaining a robust response to security challenges in the region,” he said.
The Commander used the occasion to honor the sacrifices of fallen colleagues, including the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt.- Gen. Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja.
He acknowledged their dedication to duty and the price they paid in service to our beloved nation.
He prayed that their labour would not be in vain and their souls to rest in perfect peace.
Maj.- Gen. Aligbe also appreciated the heads and representatives of other security agencies in Niger state, adding that high level of synergy and collaboration was pivotal in achieving success among the security agencies operating in a joint environment.
He therefore urged them to sustain the strategic collaborative approach in the interest of national security and development.
The Commander also recognised the corporation of traditional rulers and opinion leaders in the state who are part of critical security stakeholders
Earlier, the Commander, 31 Artillery Brigade, Brigadier General Hamidu Bobbo, described WASA as yearly occasion which serve as an avenue to showcase the cultural heritage of personnel and also promote peaceful coexistence among troops and their families.
The event featured goodwill message by the representative of theGovernor of Niger State, farmer Umaru Mohammed Bago and Emir of Minna.
There were cultural performances, music, tug of war from participating formations, and dance displays, allowing attendees to unwind and enjoy the festive atmosphere.
The highlights of the event were presentation of awards of excellence to soldiers of the participating formations which included TRADOC NA, 31 AB and 313 Artillery Regiment.
A total of 11 soldiers were awarded in three categories. These included best firers, best turned out soldiers and most disciplined soldiers respectively.
Warrant Officer Ishaku Abdullahi, Signal Man Patrick Michael and Gunner Inah Christian emerged best firers scoring a total of 98, 96 and 97 over hundred respectively in the range classification conducted quarterly by the formations.
