The Arewa Youth Assembly for Good Leadership (AYAGL) Monday accused President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio of waging a political war against the north.
The group alleged that his recent actions against northern senators indicate a deliberate attempt to silence critical voices from the region.
The group, at a press conference in Kaduna, called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene, warning that Akpabio’s alleged bias threatens national unity and democratic harmony.
“For us as northern youth, we strongly believe Akpabio is fighting the entire northern region. He wants to silence all notable voices that are critical of his high-handedness and sectional politics,” AYAGL speaker, Ambassador Abdul Danbature, said.
Citing the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, the group argued that Akpabio’s leadership has been riddled with unfair treatment of northern lawmakers.
“Our concerns are clear: Why was Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan suspended for six months? Why was her seat changed? Why was she removed as chairperson of the Senate Committee on Local Content? And why are northern women consistently harassed under this Senate leadership?,” Danbature queried.
The group also questioned Akpabio’s opposition to a motion moved by Akpoti-Uduaghan on the Nigeria LNG gas pipeline project to the north, insisting that his actions undermine the region’s interests.
“Northern Nigeria deserves better. Without the overwhelming support of northern senators, Akpabio wouldn’t be sitting as Senate President today. He must stop this victimisation, selective justice, and persecution of lawmakers from the region,” the group said.
The group noted that since Akpabio assumed office, the Senate has been embroiled in controversies, adding that they are now convinced he has an agenda against the north.
“As northern youth, we can no longer remain silent. Our senators are afraid to speak out for fear of witch-hunting and suspension. But we will not be intimidated. The mistreatment of northern senators under Akpabio’s leadership must stop,” Danbature stated.
The group demanded the immediate recall of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, warning of mass protests if their demands are ignored.
“Akpabio must recall Senator Natasha within 48 hours, or we will mobilise and occupy the National Assembly, block the Lokoja-Kaduna Expressway, and shut down all 19 northern states, including the FCT. We are fully prepared for civil protests until justice is served.”
