Anambra: SWAN worried over ‘dilapidated’ Awka township stadium built 3 years ago, sends crucial message to Soludo

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Anambra Chapter has expressed worries over the deteriorating condition of Awka Township Stadium and requested urgent action from Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

According to SWAN, Awka City stadium football pitch which was completed in December 2021 has collapsed, the tracks not in use as well as the pavilion.

The body of sports writers stated this in a Communique issued after its monthly Congress in Awka, which was signed by the chapter Chairman and Secretary, Comrade Chimezie Anaso and Comrade Ikenna Nwokedi, respectively.

The communique said it was regrettable that football pitch collapsed about three years after it was completed.

“The Congress noted with displeasure, the collapse of the Awka City Stadium Football Pitch completed in December 2021, the tracks which are not in use as well as the pavilion which is begging for urgent and comprehensive rehabilitation.

“SWAN called the State government and the contractor to interface with a view to addressing these issues. The Congress called on the State Government to give Awka City a befitting stadium by completing other aspects of the stadium including installation of an electronic scoreboard, floodlights and construction of a second pavilion,” they noted.

The association, however, endorsed the second edition of the School Sports Festival, a flagship Programme of the Anambra State Sports Development Commission, while urging them to provide more and timely funding for the sports sector to enable the Commission to identify and nurture future champions.
