Anambra: Soludo bows, moves to conduct LG

Barely six days after Justice Bello Kawu of an Abuja Federal High Court stopped Anambra State government from accessing funds meant for 21 Local Government Areas (LGAs), Governor Chukwuma Soludo has kicked started a move for conduct of election in the third tier of government.

The governor, Blueprint learnt, on Tuesday, sponsored an Executive bill aimed at resusitating the now moribund Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) and for connected purposes 2024.

The bill which also passed through second reading, was presented by the majority leader, Mr Ikenna Ofodeme, who explained that it would empower the executive arm of government to conduct local government election when passed and signed into law.

According to Mr Ofodeme, the bill has about 110 clauses and was a sign that Soludo was willing to conduct a free and fair local government election in the state.

In support of the motion, the member representing Onistha North 2 Constituency, Mr Patrick Okafor, and his counterpart from Ogbaru 1, Mr Noble Igwe, explained that they had been working on the bill for the past six months as it would empower the Commission to properly conduct a credible council poll.

The Speaker of the House, Mr Somtochukwu Udeze, who presided over the plenary, assured that they would never relent in giving the bill accelerated hearing and passage.
