Anambra lawmaker urges speedy legislation on social media

The member representing Orumba North state constituency in Anambra state House of Assembly,  Emeka Aforka, has called for immediate legal regulation of activities of social media users with a view to checkmate its excesses.

Aforka, who made the call while reacting to recent allegations of sick and death of ace Nollywood Actor, Chief Chiwetalu Agu, lamented that the rate of misinformation being disseminated on  some social media platforms mar the image of  the media.

“We are fighting against hate speech in all its form in this country. We want urgent action to be taken to nail the ugly trend. The recent information on the social media where a Nollywood legend, Chief Chiwetalu Agu  was said to be ill and in need of financial  assistance  to regain his falling health was bad.

“The purveyor  of such hate speech was out to destroy the actor’s character and wish him ill luck. The act is really condemnable and it requires legal back up to fight back. If social media operators who sell fake news are legally made to pay for their crimes, it would reduce the high rate at which people’s image are been tarnished and sanity returned to media world,” he added.
