Anambra: Group demands redeployment of Home Economics teachers


Home Economics Teachers Association of Nigeria (HETAN), Anambra State Chapter, has called for the redeployment of trained teachers across primary schools in the state.


The group made the call during a courtesy visit to the Executive Chairman of Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) in Awka.
Speaking at the visit, Mrs. Uzoamaka Josephine Onunkwo, explained that  non – Home Economics trained teachers had turned desk officers of the subject they never studied, which according to her, affects the subject in the primary school system.


According to her, the association has since called for the correction but the state government was yet to proffer solution to that. 
” Pupils in primary schools no longer carry out their lessons and practical in the laboratory as it were on the time table in the past. In the past, teachers and pupils had exhibition and competition in Home Economics subject like food and nutrition, home management, clothing and textile, crafts, horticulture and gardening but the reverse was the case now,” she hinted. 
Responding, the Chairman, Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), Mr Patrick Ugbaja, regretted that there was a general notion that Home Economics subject was gradually dying and called for review of the subject curricula in the country to acquaint students with their culture.


Ugbaja, who averred that Home Economics was not just food but science incline, urged students to always participate on its practicals aspect, and advocated for inclusion of traditional dishes in primary and secondary school’s text books.
He, however, commended the association for its achievements so far and assured them of government partnership in reviving the subject.
