Anambra State Police Command, Friday, warned that drivers of private and public vehicles not complying to third party insurance policy would face prosecution through mobile courts.
The outgoing state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Nnaghe Obono Itam, disclosed this at a sensitisation program organised in Awka to intimate heads of relevant agencies on the importance of collaborating towards its full implementation, noting that defaulters could be imprisoned or fined.
According to him, a third-party insurance policy was compulsory for all vehicles on Nigerian roads but to ensure effective enforcement, the force would organise a one week sensitisation programme tagged operation velvet.
He further explained that enrollment into the policy were premium rates which stood for N20,000 for commercial vehicles, N15,000 for private vehicles, and N5,000 for tricycles.
The police boss, however, assured that no officer would exploit the motorists because of the policy even as comprehensive Motor and corporate insurances on the other hand.
On her part, the Deputy Corps Commander, FRSC, Anambra state, Gloria Ezeugwu explained that third-party motor insurance policy provides financial compensation of up to N1 million for damages, injuries, or loss of life in the event of accidents.
She added that it could be procured from licensed insurance entities authorized by the National Insurance Commission, which can be verified online.
