Anambra community petitions Obiano over town union crisis

Amiyi community in Ogbaru LGA of Anambra state has petitioned Governor Willie Obiano to withdraw the state government recognition to the ‘former’ President General of their Town Union,  Mr Nwanze Afubera, alleging that was imposed on them by his kitchen cabinet.

The community during their peaceful protest to Anambra state government house on Tuesday, said they conducted a fresh election where one Comrade Chike Ogboma emerged as new PG following expiration of Afubera’s tenure.
Armed with placards of different inscriptions some of which read, “Gov. Obiano warn your commissioner, “

Imposition of Nwanze is invitation to war,” “Greg Obi is killing sleep in Amiyi,” among others, said there could be bloodbath if Afubera is not suspended from parading self as leader of their town union.
The spokesman of the protesters, Mr Osita Ononuju, disclosed that Amiyi is a-three village community and each was entitled to produce PG whose tenure last for three years single term.

Ononuju said Afubera was elected on 2016 and his tenure ended on June 25, 2019, and as a result, the community conducted fresh election on June 29 during which Comrade Ogboma emerged.
“We wrote to the state government informing them that the tenure of our PG has ended and we want to conduct another election. I am the first PG of Amiyi. We run a single term President general election. Once your term ends, you are not qualified to contest again.

“After the election, we were told by the commissioner that election was held on 24th June and Afubera emerged unopposed. We were surprised because nothing of such was held that day. Even our traditional ruler who supposed to know about it was meeting with some stakeholders on that date.
“We want you to command your commissioner for LG., Town Union and Chieftaincy matters to withdraw his support to him and give same to Comrade Ogboma, who is duly elected as our President General,” he said.

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) in Anambra state Ministry of Local government, Town Union and Chieftaincy matters, Comrade Henry Nwasike, who represented the commissioner, Greg Obi, collected the petitions and placards from the protesters and promised to relate their needs with the commissioner for urgent action.
Nwasike said governor Willie Obiano was a peace loving man and was happy they were following the matter peacefully.
