Alumni to build 5,000-bed capacity hostels

The National President of the Alumni Association of  Federal University Minna, Mr Ahmad Alhassan, said the association plans to construct hostels in the university to accommodate 5,000 students.

Alhassan made the disclosure during a reunion meeting of the association on Monday in Kaduna.

He said lack of adequate accommodation remained one of the biggest challenges facing the institution, forcing most students especially girls to live off campus.

“ Having identified this factor as one of the factors responsible for some of the students especially female students dropping out of school, we have resolved to come to the aid of the institution in our own little way and build an edifice of 5,000 bed-space hostels.

“Information gathered revealed that these female students at times secure accommodation where male students live,” he noted.

He stated that the vision of the institution to develop quality entrepreneurs to help the nation’s economy must always be supported by the alumni.

Alhassan promised that the alumni would continue to offer mentorship to students of the institution.

Earlier,  the guest Speaker, Mr  Yahaya Ibrahim, said alumni associations everywhere must work to improve their former institutions.

The Chairman of Kaduna State Chapter of the association, Mr Muhyideen Alimi, said the reunion also entailed using “crowd funding method” to help the lives of existing students.

Alimi, who previewed the hostels’ architectural plan during the meeting, said the association was also involved in developing Sheanut industry among others at the university.

He advised the members to redouble efforts in ensuring that the project becomes a reality.
