Akwa Ibom: APC warns Eno against meddling in Udom’s N700bn fraud allegation

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Media Network has cautioned Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom state against interfering with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) investigation into allegations of money laundering against former Governor Udom Emmanuel.

The director-general of the group, Otuekong Iniobong John,  stated this in a statement released Monday in Uyo.

He expressed concern over Governor Eno’s recent remarks, which dismissed the allegations as unfounded.

The DG described the governor’s statement as “hasty and preemptive,”  adding that the EFCC should be allowed to complete its investigation without interference.

“The governor’s statement, which dismisses the allegations as unfounded, appears to be both hasty and preemptive, especially considering that the matter is currently under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

“It is crucial to highlight that the responsibility of declaring the former governor innocent rests solely with the EFCC, following the thorough and impartial completion of its investigation.

“Making such declarations prematurely undermines the integrity of the investigative process.”

The party enjoined Governor Eno to focus on fulfilling his mandate of good governance and demonstrate a commitment to transparency and accountability.

“We encourage Governor Eno to shift his focus toward fulfilling his mandate of good governance for the people of the state.

“It is vital for him to allow the EFCC the space necessary to conduct its work without interference or premature assertions of innocence.

“By doing so, he will demonstrate a commitment to transparency and accountability, values that are essential to restoring public trust in governance,” the party said.

The party added that the governor should not act as a protector of individuals implicated in wrongdoing, but rather prioritise the interests of the citizens.

This development comes amidst a recent EFCC investigation into allegations of money laundering against Emmanuel which has sparked debate within the state’s political circles.
