Agric policy can stabilise economy – Agronomist

A don, Prof. Musibau Bamikole, has said that the federal government’s current agriculture revolution policy can stabilise the country’s economy, if eff ectively managed. Th e professor of Agronomy and Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Benin (UNIBEN), made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin on Wednesday. According to him, since the price of crude oil fell in the international market, “it has become obvious that Nigeria has to look elsewhere to sustain its economy,” adding that it is now clear that diversifi cation of the economy is the only solution. “And investing in agriculture will surely revive and drive our economy with the abundance of vast hectares of fertile land across the 36 states of the federation. “I am of the belief that the Federal and Edo governments are on point with their agriculture revolution policies.

“And that is why the deans of Faculty of Agriculture in Nigerian universities, including experts in agriculture, are having a conference in UNIBEN to brainstorm on agriculture international best practices for economic development,’’ he said. Bamikole noted that at least 50 professors of agriculture in Nigerian universities under the aegis of Association of Deans of faculty of agriculture in Nigeria (ADAN) would be participating in the association’s 61st Conference/General Meeting in Benin. Further, he disclosed that agriculture experts, including offi cials from the Agric Research Council of Nigeria, would also be attending the conference with the theme `Breaking Nigeria’s monolithic Economy through Agriculture’.
