African centre moves to end violence against women

With increased rate of reported cases of violence against women in Nigeria, a group, African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development says it was taking proactive steps to end the menace or at least reduce it to the barest minimum.

Executive Director of the group, Mr Monday Osasah, while inaugurating the network team made up of the police, traditional and religious leaders, men, women including youth groups on Wednesday in Calabar, noted that the campaign was targeted at three local government areas which include Calabar South, Calabar Municipality and Obanliku, respectively.

He said that the network team would serve as advocacy platforms to promote gender based equitable norms, attitudes and behaviours, and therefore appealed to those outside the group to join in the campaign against the anomaly.

Osasah submitted that the formation of the network was part of the implementation of the male engagement component of the Spotlight Initiative Project in Cross River.

According to him, Spotlight Initiative is a European Union and United Nations new global, multi-year initiative that spotlights and places emphasis and efforts on achieving gender equality and women’s empowerment in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

“The African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development is a leading national non-governmental organisation and think thank in Nigeria, registered to build sustainable leadership for sustainable development in Africa.

“The centre’s mission is to work with forces of positive change to empower citizens to transform society.
