ADC defends Eno’s plan for 18-storey Ibom Towers in Lagos

The Akwa Ibom state chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has defended Governor Umo Eno’s decision to construct an 18-storey commercial Ibom Towers in Lagos.

This comes amidst criticism from various quarters, with some arguing that the project is insensitive and a waste of Akwa Ibom’s resources.

In a telephone chat with Blueprint correspondent in Uyo on Sunday, ADC spokesman, Mr. Manfred Ekpe, noted that criticism is healthy for democracy as it holds the government accountable for its action but emphasised the need for a balanced perspective, considering both sides of the argument.

Ekpe explained that the project is not a new venture but rather an upgrade of an existing property on Aboyade Cole Street, Victoria Island, Lagos, constructed 33 years ago.

Ekpe said the current property has become a liability, hosting criminals and rodents, and generating no revenue for the state despite multimillion-naira tenement rates paid to the Lagos state government.

He believes that the proposed tower will convert this liability into an asset, generating income for the state through rental of its 31 one- and two-bedroom flats and business suites.

Ekpe dismissed concerns about developing Lagos, stating that the tower will not significantly impact the city’s aesthetics.

He also argued that building the tower in Uyo would not generate comparable revenue to what it would in Lagos.
