The federal government through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has distributed relief assistance to the displaced persons from insurgency in Kala’a, Hong local government area of Adamawa state and the residents of Chibok in Borno state that were affected by attacks in their communities to provide them with succour.
The items were distributed by officers of the NEMA from its North East zonal office led by the coordinator Mohammed Kanar and officials of the Borno and Adamawa state governments as well as other stakeholders. The distribution in Chibok was done at the Central Primary School.
The relief items consist of food and non food items like clothes, beddings, mosquito nets and other essential house hold needs.
The zonal coordinator also made a commitment to prevail on the agency to provide boreholes in the community so as to ease the perennial shortage of drinking water.
Experts from the Safe School Initiative also accompanied the team to conduct needs assessment on schools destroyed in Chibok and other places affected.
While expressing their appreciation, representatives of the IDPs who spoke at the event, said NEMA under the leadership of the director-general, Alhaji Muhammad Sani-Sidi, had been very helpful in alleviating their suffering.
In kala’a, the NEMA officers were supported by staff of Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA) led by the executive secretary Haruna Furo and Red Cross in the distribution of the relief items to the displaced persons drawn from communities from Adamawa North senatorial District that had been affected by the recent insurgency attacks.
Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Kalaa, Pastor Tatami Elkana, and Chairman of Muslim Council in the area, Alhaji Abubakar Kunliyi, who received the items on behalf of the IDPs, expressed their appreciation to President Goodluck Jonathan for providing the relief materials to the community which included food and non food basic essentials and household needs.
