ACF hails renaming of University of Abuja after Gowon

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) Tuesday applauded the federal government’s decision to rename the University of Abuja after General Yakubu Gowon, Nigeria’s former head of state.

In a statement signed by its national publicity secretary, Prof. Tukur Muhammad-Baba, the forum described the gesture as a fitting tribute to General Gowon’s contributions to Nigeria’s unity and development during his time as head of state from 1967 to 1975.

The ACF noted that the decision, which comes shortly after Gowon’s 90th birthday, is a significant honour bestowed on one of Nigeria’s national heroes.

“This renaming is a well-deserved recognition of General Gowon’s leadership and dedication to preserving Nigeria’s unity. It is commendable that the federal government is honouring him while he is alive to witness this recognition,” the statement said.

The forum also urged the National Assembly to expedite the legislative process required to formalise the renaming.
ACF congratulated General Gowon, his family, and the University of Abuja community on the milestone.
