Abia records 90 fire incidents in 5 months

Abia state government has said that about 90 fire incidents were recorded across the state between November 2013 and February 5, 2014.

The state director of Federal Fire Service, Okey Victor Gbaruko, disclosed this in Umuahia while receiving two modern firefighting trucks and two water tankers from the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), disclosing that that before then, the service had only three trucks; one at Umuahia and two at Aba.

Gbaruko said with the NDDC trucks, now seven, will go a long way to enable them fight fire outbreaks in the state.
While thanking the NNDC for the gesture, Gbaruko pleaded with the state governor, Chief Theodore Orji, for the payment of hazard allowance for his men.

Speaking earlier, the member representing Abia in the board of NDDC, Sam Nwogu, said the NDDC donated the equipments to ensure that such fire incidents do not occur again, and to help in fighting fire outrage in any part of the state, thus protecting lives and properties in the state.
He called for a judicious use of the vehicles by the men of fire service, and promised not to disappoint the state as their representative in the NDDC board.

Receiving the vehicles, the Abia state Governor, Theodore Orji, thanked the NDDC for the vehicles, stating that the state needs more from them, pleading that they should endeavor to complete their on-going projects in the state.
