6 cops, 43 others nabbed for rape, extortion

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, yesterday, said six policemen attached to the command were arrested for extortion at gunpoint, defi lement and attempted murder in the last two weeks. Owoseni said two of the policemen arrested for extortion, who have since been dismissed, were fond of raiding unsuspectingmembers of the public in the metropolis, branding them as internet fraudsters. Speaking to journalists in Lagos, he said: “Th ese policemen are tarnishing the image of the police by using weapons bought with taxpayers’ money to threaten, intimidate and extort the people.”

He said the four other policemen were undergoing Orderly Room trial for attempted murder and defi lement, noting that two of the policemen were arrested at Ajao Estate, where they were shooting sporadically. “We do not want to cover up any erring police offi cer; therefore, members of the public particularly victims should turn up when they are invited to testify against such offi cers; that way we will be able to sanitize the Force,” Owoseni said. He said that 24 robbery suspects, 19 suspected cultists and three kidnap suspects were also arrested by offi cers and men of the command in the last one month. He said that two AK- 47 rifl es, 88 diff erentcharms and 16 vehicles were recovered from the suspected cultists. Th e police boss added that members of a robbery gang also known as ‘one chance’, which specialized in robbing passengers in commercial buses, were also arrested and phones suspected to have been stolen from their victims were also recovered
