Over 5,000 athletes and officials from across Kaduna state are expected to participate in the 6th Kaduna State Sports Festival, which kicks off on Monday February 24, the state Commissioner for Sports Development has said.
Prof. Kabiru Mato said that the athletes to be drawn from the 23 local government areas would compete in 16 events in the competition, that is making a return after 10 years, as part of preparation for the Edo 2020 National Sports Festival.
“Arrangements are on top gear by the Ministry of Sports Development to organise the 6th edition of Kaduna State Sports Festival scheduled to hold between February 24 and March 1.
“The Festival is being organised for the first time in over 10 years to identify talents from the grassroots for an effective participation of the state at the National Sports Festival and other national competitions.
“Over 5,000 athletes and officials from all 23 local government areas across the state will compete for laurels in 16 sporting events, namely, football, basketball, volleyball, handball, table tennis, tennis and hockey. Others are athletics (track & field), cricket, badminton, traditional sports (langa, ayo, kokuwa), swimming, golf, chess, scrabble and dart.
“The one-week fiesta offers a good platform for expressing and implementation of Kaduna state government sporting programmes at the grassroots levels which is one of the cardinal principles of Governor Nasir el-Rufai administration.
“In addition, the festival would provide another opportunity to consolidate on the peaceful atmosphere and build bridges of unity and strengthen stability, tranquility and peaceful coexistence in the state,” the Sports Commissioner added.
