5 rescued in Abuja building collapse, no life lost – FEMA

A building under construction in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has collapsed.

The collapsed four-bedroom flat, according to an eyewitness, is located around Aso Savings Bank in Kubwa village.

It was gathered that no fewer than five people had been rescued while efforts were still being made to rescue the rest as rescue officials were already on ground at the time of filing in this report.

Meanwhile, the director-general of the FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Alhaji Abbas Idriss, has said no life was lost in the incident.

He said this after a briefing from the acting director, Forecasting Response and Mitigation, Mrs. Florence Wenegieme, who led the search and rescue team to the scene of the incident.

According to a statement released Friday by the head of public affairs, Nkechi Isa, Idriss said the Agency received a distress call about the incident at 11.45pm Thursday evening and thereafter activated its stakeholders to the scene.

He said the five rescued victims were taken to Kubwa District Hospital, adding that two of the patients had since been discharged.

He commended the construction companies who in line with their corporate social responsibilities mobilised and deployed all their resources to saving lives, also commending security agencies for their vigilance and support.

Idriss, who appealed to developers to always obey the building code, warned residents to desist from living in uncompleted buildings.
