Five secondary school teachers from Epe, Lagos state, has lost their lives in an auto-crash on Ijebu-Ode/Epe Road in the early hours of Tuesday while returning from the state secretariat to their base.
It was learnt that the teachers were at the secretariat, Alausa, for staff auditing. Also, it was said that the death toll may increase because it was learnt that some of those involved in the accident are in critical health condition, as at the time of writing this story.
A reliable source said the teachers were returning from Alausa where they went for staff auditing of teachers working in the state civil service to detect ghost workers in the state teaching service.
The source added that the teachers from Epe came to Alausa in hired buses for the exercise which was held at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium in Alausa secretariat.
“There were lots of teachers in attendance since the exercise involved all secondary teachers in Lagos state.
“The Epe teachers could not complete their audit as at 7 pm Monday when the exercise closed and they headed back home,” the source added.
The source added that the teachers opted to follow Lagos- Ijebu Ode-Epe route as against Lekki-Ajah – Epe route due to construction works on the road.
“They were in a convoy of about ten 18-seater buses, because there were about 167 secondary school teachers in Epe and they all came for the exercise, ” said the source.
It was learnt that a truck driver driving against traffic was responsible for the accident as the truck had a head on collision with the leading bus in the convoy.
“Five teachers died on the spot while the injured ones were rushed to the Epe General Hospital,” the source added.
The report said the accident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, 31 December, 2024,” the source added.
The Epe General Hospital was besieged by teachers and their families as at the time of writing this report.
Some teachers blamed the state government for failing to decentralise the staff auditing exercise.
