5 in court over N15m 40-foot container theft

A 70-year-old man, Othomor, alongside four other accomplices, are standing trial before an Igbosere Magistrate’s Court, Lagos, over theft of a 40-foot container loaded with building materials worth N15 million. Othomor, alongside Yusuf, 61; Adewale, 43; Adewale, 49, and Abdumaliki, 37, are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and theft.

Th e prosecutor, Mr. Nosa Uhumwangho, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on September 13, at Wharf Terminal, Apapa, Lagos. He said the defendants conspired among themselves and stole a 40-foot container loaded with goods valued at N15 million, belonging to the complainant, Ibekahgon Nigeria Ltd. According to the prosecutor, the offences committed are punishable under Sections 287 (5) (a) (b) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. Th e defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges when read out to them. Sequel to their no guilty plea, their counsel, Mr. U. N. Ezeokeke, urged the court to grant them bail on liberal terms as they were still presumed to be innocent.

Th e magistrate, Mr. Patrick Adekomaiya, granted them bail in the sum of N2 million each with two sureties each in like sum. One of the bail conditions is that the sureties must show certifi ed copy of their bank statements and show evidence of three years tax payment to Lagos State Government. Th e case was adjourned till December 14 for trial.
