458,000 die of breast cancer annually – Expert

The Nigeria Breweries Plc has called for increased awareness on breast cancer, particularly early detection and proper management of the disease to reduce its high rate in the society. 

 This is as a medical expert, Dr. Moroof Suleiman, guest lecturer and head O&G of Gwamna Awan Hospital, Dr. Moroof Suleiman, has disclosed of 1.38 million new cases of breast cancer and 458,000 deaths worldwide each year with Nigeria accounting for about 50,000 of such deaths.

Speaking in Kaduna on Monday after partnering with Gwamna Awan General Hospital, Kakuri on public enlightenment, the brewery manager, Mr. Abbey Ajayi, said the company was set to build an emergency unit at the general hospital to cater for patients with breast cancer. 

Ajayi, who was represented by the public affairs manager North, Mr. Danjuma John-Ekele, noted the importance of early detection, adding that, “we have been in Kaduna for over 54 years with a rich partnership history especially in our host communities and we feel the pains of what the women go through as a result of breast cancer. 

“To further improve services in the hospital, we have also concluded arrangements to build an emergency unit at the Gwamna Awan Hospital for prompt medical attention,” Ekele said.

 The guest lecturer and head O&G of the hospital, Dr. Moroof Suleiman, stated that “There are 1.38 million new cases of breast cancer and 458,000 deaths worldwide from breast cancer each year and Nigeria accounts for about 50,000 of such deaths. Breast cancer is by far the most common cancer in women worldwide, both in the developed and developing countries”.
