2026 World Cup qualifiers: Peseiro’s Super Eagles fail to fly over Zimbabwe

 

Nigeria’s Super Eagles once again dropped points in their Group C 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers after they forced Warriors of Zimbabwe to a 1-1 draw in Rwanda on Sunday,

The encounter saw the Jose Peseiro led side conceding a goal to draw in the second game running following the 1-1 scoreline with Lesotho on matchday one in Uyo on Thursday.

New invitee Nathan Tella made his debut for the Eagles as he was named in the starting 11 before going off before the start of the second half for goal scorer Kelechi Iheanacho.

The next game in the qualifiers for the Eagles will be a home game against South Africa on June 2, 2024.

After two rounds of games played, the Eagles are second on two points and will go down on the table after the other teams in Group C played their matches on Tuesday.

They now have two points from two matches, while main rivals South Africa remain top with three points after their opening day win over Benin which ended 2-1.

South Africa will be guests of Rwanda on Tuesday, same day Lesotho welcome Benin in South Africa.

Zimbabwe opened the scoring in the 26th minute through a brilliant long range free-kick from Walter Musona that left Francis Uzoho stranded in the post.

On 56 minutes the Eagles got a big opportunity after they were awarded an indirect free-kick but failed to take advantage.

In the 65th minute Kelechi Iheanacho drew the Eagles level as he finished off an assist from Moses Simon after coming in from Terem Moffi in the second half of the games played at Huye, Rwanda.

Zimbabwe almost retook the lead on 82 minutes after Francis Uzoho failed to hold a cross but the effort hit the side netting.

In the 88th minute Zimbabwe got a free kick on the edge of the box following a foul by Jamilu Collins but the wall stopped the goal bound shot.
